I enjoy a huge variety of roles within photography, but have particular fondness for landscape, documentary and portraiture. I currently balance my time between photographing for the Victoria & Albert Museum (mostly studio-based object photography, still-life and portraiture) and charities (events, demonstrations and documentary work) and my own (mainly) documentary projects.
The latter involves a kind of ‘landscape-documentary’ hybrid practice, aimed at exhibition and publication, using a combination of traditional film and digital processes. I generally combine traditional documentary subjects: portraits and details, with a more nuanced and focused approach to landscape imagery. I’m particularly interested in how the landscape can become a portrait of the society that lives in it, and that society’s evolution over time. I find it fascinating how a wealth of information can be read within a seemingly simple landscape image by viewing it with a different perspective and background. Inspiration for this ranges from the Peak District landscape where I was brought up, to my adopted home in the Scottish Highlands on Tanera Mhor. Recently my work has taken a more overtly political turn, and I hope to raise awareness of ecological and socio-political issues with subtle, questioning imagery.
